• The shelves are packed with toys with a cross generational appeal, but which demographic is buying most?

    As Christmas looms ahead, thoughts move towards the hottest toys this year and parents steel themselves in the annual slog to make sure they get the sought after merchandise. And so do a lot of grown men. The recent trend for retro toys has had an impact on the sort of shopper we find in toy stores and online.

    A two tier market has developed, stimulated by an increase in retro culture. The TV schedules and multiplexes are filled with remakes The Dukes of Hazzard, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Starsky and Hutch, Bewitched, Doctor Who and Star Wars have all made an outing in the last year alone. But as these remakes and rehashes appear vying for an audience?, the question has to be asked who is the audience? These films have a cross-generational appeal the kids they are strictly catered for and the kids who watched them the first time around.

    The impact on the commercial worlds is profound. The merchandising industry which inevitably surrounds the movie and TV world knows all too well of the

  • More than a few times, Ive caught myself sitting at work day dreaming about dropping everything and just jumping on a plane. In October of 2003, I did just that.

    Life can grind you down when you get in a rut. In my case, I had a particularly bad case of the blues in October 2003. My girlfriend and I had apparently come to an agreement that there was no need for me to exist on the face of the earth. My glamorous and exciting Internet business had become a bore. All and all, I was in a rut and needed a change. The travel gods apparently agreed.

    On a Wednesday, I made the final decision to sell my business, get what I could for it and hit the road. The next day, I received a call from a man in Chicago what wanted to buy my web sites. This was particularly interesting since I hadnt actually told anyone the sites were for sale. By the end of the day, we had agreed on a price, signed a contract and he was wiring the money.

    First thing Monday morning, my bank verified the wired money had been

  • Men and women have and maintain two separate, distinct schools of thought. This comes down to more than biology and physiology, naturally. For example, men and women feel, register, and acknowledge pain differently. The two are further separated by factors such as mental health and emotional health, along with the cultural roles typically attributed to them. Gender, along with culture and environment, can also determine how a person deals with stress, depression, and a variety of other emotionally-connected problems and disorders. However, according to some recent studies, even the importance of emotional bonds over financial gain are processed differently by the two sides.

  • A commercial development of any size is a serious undertaking. Get it right and you come away with a good profit and happy buyers or tenants. Get it wrong, and you could lose money and your reputation, making it difficult to obtain financing next time round.

    The project

    A proper project plan should take you all the way through your development. By necessity, it needs to be comprehensive, but the detailed requirements of such a project often turn the project plan into a complex document that confuses everyone who reads it. Use the following steps to help keep everything organised:

    Write a clear initial plan outlining each chunk of the project:

    Land purchase
    Use and design
    Planning requirements
    Initial building requirements
    Central building phase
    Fitting-out
    Marketing
    Sale or rental

    Each of these areas should be further broken down so that you know exactly what has to be accomplished and in what order to make the project successful. It is a good idea to use the available expertise of your architect, designer, construction company and other advisers to ensure that everything is covered.

    The timetable

    A project should always have an achievable timescale. Trying to accomplish a development too

  • It was their company’s first ever breakfast seminar. Sally Thompson had never designed a seminar before. She knew the start time, the finish time and had a list of presentations that had to be made but could she make it fit?

    Remember that, for maximum impact, each hour of an event should be divided equally into one third listening, one third discussing and one third doing. So, for every hour you really only need a script for twenty minutes and, if you are using a PowerPoint type presentation, a well-paced speaker will “talk to” one slide of the presentation every 3 minutes on average. You therefore need around 7 text slides each with no more than 7 bullet points to generate a one-hour chunk of the event.

    This is obviously a rough guide but when you consider writing event material in this way, it can remove some of the fear factor. Most delegates will be satisfied with your normal product literature and a copy of the slides printed out as lecture notes with a space to add their own observations. If there is no-one in your organization with the time or the skill to write the presentation material

  • Have you always dreamed of owning your own business, having the time and money to visit exotic locations and being able to fly first class?

    If you love traveling, live in or near a city with a large national or international airport, and you have the kind of lifestyle that lets you pick up and go on a moment’s notice, then you might want to think about starting your own business as an “air courier”.

    What is an air courier? It’s a person who is hired to transport a specific item from one destination to another, within a specified deadline.

    And, before you start imagining sinister men in trench coats carrying guns with silencers, and beautiful foreign women transporting secret microchips, let me reassure you that traveling as an air courier is 100% legal and aboveboard!

    What you are asked to transport varies tremendously — it can be almost anything — legal documents such as letters or business contracts, children going from one country to another, medicine that was forgotten during a vacation, reports, computer disks, product prototypes — the list is endless.

    In fact, because of the “instant gratification” mindset today where we are used to information and communication

  • In a world where there isn’t exactly enough time for all the things people have to do, almost everybody still finds themselves hooked to a certain hobby. Collecting baseball cards or stamps, buttons even, knitting, wood crafting, landscaping, what have you. And in this long list, comic book collection.seems to place itself amongst the top.

    The popularity of comic books gained momentum during the 1960′s. However, comic book enthusiasts would remember the story of the Yellow Kid in Hogans Alley published in two leading newspapers in 1895, now considered as the first ever comic strip in history. From then on, comic characters have risen from the creative minds of writers and illustrators such as Stan Lee and the others.

    The idea of comic book collection came out naturally as fanatics developed. While people started out collecting comic books for fun, others collected for profitable interests. This occurred after newspapers featured certain comic books that prove to be of economic value.

    However, many a consumer would often than not be misguided on what comic book to collect and how to appropriately collect.

    Whether you collect for the hang of it or for profit, here are some pointers that

  • Finding an internship position while a college student is a great way to gain experience in your chosen field, experience the workplace firsthand, learn industry “jargon,” and develop marketable skills. An internship can also lead to a position with the same company or a direct referral for another position. You can also use the experience and references to land your ideal job. How do you go about finding this type of internship?

    Use Your School’s Resources

    As a college student, take advantage of your school’s career services. Too many students do not take advantage of this opportunity. The career services personnel can help you identify and locate internship opportunities that might not otherwise know about.

    Additionally, use the staff in your department, including professors and administrative staff. These people also may hear of internship opportunities that they can pass along to you. It’s also a good idea for students to stay in contact with these professionals because these relationships are the beginning of your networking contacts. Your instructors are great resources for jobs, references, and other opportunities.

    Conduct Your Own Research

    If there is a company that you would really like to do an internship with, conduct some research

  • After 14 years as a successful chiropractor I have finally discovered what I believe to be the very best tool for improving the back-strength and overall health of my patients. That tool is the kettlebell something I had never heard of until two years ago. I have to admit that initially they intimidated me until I needed them for my own injury.

    The Doctor Becomes a Patient

    Growing up I was always extremely athletic in high school and college. I lettered in volleyball, softball, and basketball, and I became a Doctor of Chiropractic because I knew firsthand how important a strong and well-aligned body is for physical activity.

    As an athlete and a doctor I never experienced any problems with back pain until about 5 years ago. I was adjusting a very large male patient (63 300lbs), something I never had a problem with in the past because of my use of proper techniques.

    Somehow this time was different. When I applied my force into this patients body to adjust his hips nothing moved. I felt like I had just attempted to pass my hands through a pillar of marble. The resulting wave of resistance immediately reverberated through my entire

  • All of the planning in the world is an exercise in futility without the working capital to successfully carry out the plan. If a business sells to customers on terms, then working capital availability is dependent on cash flow timing. In most instances a business will incur a cash flow gap between the time cash is required for inventory, payroll and operating expenses, and the time cash is received from customers paying on terms. Lets explore a simple example of this timing difference that makes up the cash flow gap:

    Day 1: Your business orders materials from suppliers on N/30 terms;
    Day 3: Your business receives materials and begins production (which takes 5 days);
    Day 8: Your business ships product to customers on N/30 terms;
    Day 14: Mid month Payroll is due;
    Day 30: Month-end Payroll and supplier invoice are due;
    Day 48: Your customer remits payment to you.

    In this scenario the cash gap is 34 days, which is from day 14 when payroll is due, to day 48 when customer remits payment. The cash gap encompasses two pay periods and a payment to your supplier, whereas the gap normally includes multiple payments to suppliers for ongoing customer
