What Are The Benefits Of Organic Food?

March 30th, 2011

There is much discussion today about the pros and cons of organic food. People want to know whether organic food is better than non-organic food. They wonder whether the term organic is nothing more than the latest money-making marketing term being thrown about. They question the regulatory oversight bodies that determine whether the food thats labeled organic really meets all of the criteria. These are difficult questions to answer with certainty especially since the answers often depend on who is asked. Regardless, there are several very real benefits of consuming organic food. Here is an overview of the most common.

Organic Food Tastes Better

The people who eat organic food claim that organic food is more flavorful and studies have actually been conducted that confirm this belief. The chemicals that are used in the production of non-organic food definitely affect flavor.

Organic Food is Better for the Body

The United States Environmental Protection Agency now lists many of the chemicals used in the production of pesticides and fungicides as potential cancer-causing components. It makes sense then, that when non-organic foods are consumed, so too are these cancer-causing ingredients. Since these types of chemicals cannot be used to grow organic foods, they simply are not present and therefore, they cannot be ingested. Eating organic foods wont unfortunately prevent cancer because there are plenty of genetic and environmental factors that can cause it to develop. However eating organic food greatly reduces the chance that certain cancers will develop.

In addition, organically-grown produce contains up to 50% more of the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants the body needs to stay healthy and perform at optimum capacity. If youre trying to add more fruit and vegetables to your diet, you can double the benefits by eating organic ones.

You Can Feel Good about What You Eat

When you eat organic food, you know what youre not getting. You know youre not eating food thats been genetically altered or shot up with growth hormones and antibodies. You know that the skins of your fruits and vegetables arent a thick covering of chemicals and other harmful ingredients. The bottom line: You know that you are fueling your body with healthy fuel. Centuries ago, people did not have as many health-related issues as they do in these more modern times. Plenty of people feel it is our food that is killing us.

You Help Protect Environment

When pesticides and fertilizers are applied to plants, there is no way to keep the chemicals used in their production from covering the ground. Rain and irrigation cause these chemicals to be absorbed into the ground. As they absorb into the ground, they percolate down to the underground water tables. Ultimately, the chemicals leach into nearby water bodies. The soil as well as the water begins to be contaminated. Over time the birds, fish and other animals living in these environments become affected. Since organic foods are grown without using these dangerous chemicals, their growth will never impact the environment in this manner.

The Value of Virtual

March 30th, 2011

Copyright 2006 Dana Blozis

While secretaries and administrative assistants have been around for years, the term virtual assistant is a relatively new term that has become popular along side the Internet. What is a virtual assistant? Also called a VA, a virtual assistant is the online equivalent of an office administrative assistant.

As independent contractors, virtual assistants work for their clients off-site, performing a variety of administrative tasks. Common duties include data entry, web design and maintenance, bookkeeping, word processing and transcription. While many virtual assistants offer basic office skills like these, others specialize in areas like accounting, research, mailings, marketing and public relations.

Because virtual assistants work off-site, often from their own home offices, businesses that hire them do not incur additional overhead expenses, payroll taxes or benefit payments. Instead, the business gains the experience and expertise of the virtual assistant while only paying for the services performed. This set-up can be particularly valuable to the small business owner or nonprofit that cant afford to hire additional staff. It can also be ideal for firms that need to fill employment gaps during peak times, maternity leaves and vacations.

How does it work? Once a virtual assistant has been selected, the hiring firm and the VA outline their terms. This is typically done via e-mail or telephone (e.g., virtually). The hiring firm spells out the work to be performed, standards of performance and the needed deadline. The virtual assistant quotes a price, or an hourly rate, for the work and her payment terms. Prices and rates vary based on the type of work, level of expertise required and the deadline. More complex projects or those that are needed right away will likely be more costly than simple tasks. Once an agreement has been made, the VA gets to work, contacting the hiring firm as needed with questions. Once the project has been submitted and approved by the hiring firm, the virtual assistant paid. This can also be done virtually through online payment systems like PayPal.

How can you find a virtual assistant? There are a number of professional virtual assistant associations accessible online including the International Virtual Assistants Association (IVAA), the International Association of Virtual Office Assistants (IAVOA) and the International Association of Virtual Assistants (IAVA). In addition to offering certification programs for virtual assistants, these associations often include online directories where you can search for virtual assistants. A simple Google search of the term virtual assistant will also yield millions of results.

The key is finding someone:
(1) who can perform the needed tasks on time;
(2) who will communicate clearly and on a timely basis;
(3) that will maintain your privacy and confidentiality; and
(4) with whom you will enjoy working.

If you can accomplish these four goals with a virtual assistant, she can become a valuable part of your virtual team.

How to lower Your Risk of Cancer and Heart Disease

March 29th, 2011

There are many great aspects to this subject, which we will review carefully so that you may get the most from it.

In today’s world of technology when it comes to our health, it seems that we have grown accustom to pleasing drugs in order to heal our bodies. The terrifying part about this is the verity that drugs themselves can actually be the catalyst to creating even more health problems.

What needs to be talked about more is how we can drop the risk of many diseases nowadays naturally, before they occur.

A research conducted by the, “Archives of inside Medicine” showed that the amount of exercise we have in our daily lives is directly related to years lived without cardiovascular disease.

Do you feel as though you have a firm grasp of the basics of this subject? If so, then you are ready to read the next part.

In fact walking just 30 minutes a day can elongate our life by 1.3 years and add another 1.1 years of life devoid of heart disease. This reflects the study of those with low activity levels to those who walked at least 30 minutes per day.

Walking helps to prevent breast cancer. Walking 30 minutes per day can help to reduce your risk by 30%. Walking 45 minutes per day can help to reduce your risk by 45%.

Walking can help prevent and reduce depressions, diminish the levels of bone loss and in fact, walking is just one of those things that greatly help to decrease the risk of so many diseases, it’s a long list to name them all.

Compare the differences between a river that is flowing at a steady speed to one that is sluggish or barely flowing at all.

The river that has a steady flow is full of life. It is clear and refreshing. The fish, the frogs, and the turtles along with all other creatures living in the water are flourishing as the water is fully aerated and fresh.

The river that is stagnant. Well, you can imagine the smell and the look of the water and the surroundings. A stagnating river is dying, as are all living things inside it. A stagnant river is gradually becoming more and more polluted due to the inability of movement, which over time can cause the river to die.

This is a good illustration of how our bodies work. When we incorporate daily exercise in our lives, we are helping our bodies rid itself of many things that will initiate it to stagnate.

Walking increases our blood flow as our hearts beat faster. This activity promotes a healthful flow of fluids throughout our bodies and increases the ability to eliminate harmful toxins that build up in our bodies and promote disease.

Every day you do not walk, think about the stagnant river. Think of how that river water smells and how the water looks. Think of the dead fish and the decaying plants. Think of how that river is slowing dying.

Perhaps knowing that your river of life is growing stagnant inside you without a daily walk will be a motivating factor in helping you to find the time and energy to add it into your routine.

In the beginning, you may only be able to walk a few minutes per day. Take it slow and add more time to your walks as you build up the strength and staying power to do so.

And please remember to discuss your new walking routine with your physician if you have any doubts as to whether it is something you personally can do.

The next time someone asks you about this topic, you can give a little smile and provide him or her an informative answer.

But about the part in making money online, now that’s true. Many success stories can attest that there are legit steps to be taken in the Internet to make money online.

So our main concern is, where is all this money coming from?

Simple, its from advertising. So many companies have learned and appreciated doing business online and traditional marketing and advertising has taken the next step.

Websites that have large traffic and have a semblance to a website can make use of the site to promote their products. So if you have a compilation of great pictures, videos and stories about a certain niche, you can use this to attract people to go in your website and eventually have them click on your sponsored sites.

As each sponsor site gets a click or does a successful sale, you can be half-expecting for a paycheck to come.

So basically, you wouldn’t be breaking a sweat. All you have to do is build a site where people can enjoy browsing to. This traffic can be redirected to an affiliate site and get commissions on their sale.

Making money online doesn’t have to mean you have to bare your body. With the right amount of promotions and a catching promotional slogan and brochure, you can capture the interest of your consumers and actually have a sale. So don’t just rely on your laurels, you can make money online.

As a supplementary to your income or as a sideline letting you save up or by the things you need.

Believe It, You Are What You Eat!

March 26th, 2011

You are what you eat —- this often-used phrase has come to describe the belief that a person’s totality, including his health, appearance, mood, and thoughts, is shaped by the food he eats. Anthelme Brillat-Savarin wrote, in Physiologie du Gout, ou Meditations de Gastronomie Transcendante, 1826: Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es. meaning Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are. In an essay entitled Concerning Spiritualism and Materialism, 1863/4, Ludwig Andreas Feuerbach wrote: Der Mensch ist, was er it, which translates into English as man is what he eats.

Are You Stressed by Studying for Exams? Study More Efficiently!

March 25th, 2011

Whether you are learning a new language or a subject like geography, these simple tips could save you hours of study time – and result in higher marks.

HIGHLIGHTING FUNDAMENTALS

You have probably used highlighters in textbooks and study notes; but are you getting the most out of them?

To learn anything, you must repeat the material. You go over it again – and again - and again. Then when you are confident that you have learned the information, you progress to more studying. However, this repetition process also means that you are wasting time going over facts and information you already know.

Don’t do it!

After you have learned about 80% of the material, use a yellow highlighter to mark everything that has eluded you. Next time through, concentrate on only the yellow areas. Try the memorization process a few more times until you have absorbed about 80% of the yellow text. Then do it again, marking over top of the yellow with a pink highlighter. This produces an orange shade. Spend more time memorizing everything with orange highlights.

This highlighting process produces three sections:

* Easy – no highlighting

* Moderately difficult – yellow highlighting

* Difficult – orange highlighting

The closer you get to an exam, the more time you should spend on the orange areas. They are your personal stumbling blocks. The 5%-10% of unknown material usually causes 95% or more of exam errors.

MAGNETISM – AND NOT THE PERSONAL KIND!

A magnetic metal clipboard can be a useful studying tool. If you don’t have one, you can use a small magnetic dry-erase board and a bulldog clip. You will also need a small refrigerator magnet (the flat business-card type that is distributed by dentists and plumbers).

Clip a page of study notes onto the board and use the fridge magnet to cover the answers. If the telephone rings or you are distracted by raiding the fridge for a snack, the magnet will keep track of your place on the page.

Experiment to see how many pages you can clip onto the board at one time before the magnet refuses to stick. You might be able to work with a pile of 5 or more sheets. Go through the first one, put it on the bottom of the pile, and proceed to the next.

After exams are finished, you can recycle photocopies or printouts by turning them over and using the other side of each page. You might even want to make your own notepads.

Carefully line up a stack of paper. Lay the stack on the edge of a table or desk and set a couple of heavy books on top. Use notepad glue or white glue to paint the ends. Once the glue dries, remove the books and separate the pile into manageable notepads.

You don’t have a magnetic clipboard? Try an internet search for ‘magnetic clipboard’.

The Early History Of Broadway Musicals

March 24th, 2011

Broadway as a symbol

Broadway is the street in New York that has come to symbolize live theater entertainment and musicals throughout the world. Today the area, known to tourists and theater-goers, stretches from W.41st Street, where the Netherlander Theater is located, up to W. 53rd.Street’s Broadway Theater. Only four theaters are located physically on Broadway, the Marquis at 46th Street, the Palace at 47th Street, the Winter Garden at 50th Street and the Broadway at 53rd. All the other legitimate houses are located east or west of this twelve block stretch.

Broadway Stars.

By the 1830′s America was exporting stars to Europe. The first notable American actor to make a successful tour was Edwin Forrest, who at nineteen, had played Iago to Edmond Kean’s Othello. Forrest’s second tour of Great Britain, in the following decade didn’t fare as well. He was hissed off stage. Though the disruption of his tour was a personal feud with a British actor, its results were well publicized in the American Press and his return to the American stage was received with populist fervor. This “personal feud” became an international incident and demonstration of class struggle in 1849, when the British actor in question was scheduled to perform at the Astor Place Opera House in New York. A riot ensued on the night of May 10th which was put down with troops and cannon.

Broadways first marquis.

In 1891, the first electric marquis was lit on Broadway. The theater was on Madison Square at the intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue at W. 23rd Street. The Flatiron Building now occupies the site. By midway through the following decade, the street blazed with electric signs as each theater announced its shows and stars in white lights. By the turn of the 20th Century the street had an entirely different look, with as many as sixteen theaters on Broadway itself and many others located on the side streets or other avenues. Broadway was much more than a mere twelve blocks. It started at 13th Street and wound its way a mile and a half up the Avenue to 45th Street, ending in the heart of Long acre Square. This first decade of the century also saw the construction of many theaters, most notably the New Amsterdam on 42nd Street in 1903, along with four others in that same year, that are still standing today.

Our Broadway.

The first decade of the 20th Century was both boring and transformational in the history of our Broadway Musicals. The seeds of that transformation go back to 1882, and the construction of The Madison Square Theater at 24th Street. The Mallorys, who had built the theater, had employed a young actor-manager from San Francisco along with two brothers from the lower Eastside to help manage the theater. David Belasco, who had the distinction of appearing on stage with another unknown child, Maude Adams, in San Francisco in 1877, was soon to become a playwright, theater owner and builder. The two brothers from the lower Eastside were, of course, Charles and Daniel Frohman. The first sign of the transformation occurred when producer Rudolf Aronson decided to build a theatre of his own. At the time, theatres were concentrated between Union Square and 24th Street.

Visiting With The Pediatrician What To Expect

March 23rd, 2011

In the first year of your babys life, you will be visiting your pediatrician about every other month, for well check ups and immunizations. Heres a rundown of how those visits go, and approximately how often youll need to visit.

Two week visit
Some doctors schedule a visit earlier than two weeks, but most pediatricians begin at the two week mark. Your babys weight, length and head circumference will be measured, and you can expect this at every well baby checkup during this first year. They will also do a general exam and check the babys fontanel. One thing the doctor particularly interested in at this checkup is babys weight gain. Your baby will typically lose some weight right after birth, so at this checkup the doctor will want to ensure that baby is gaining back the lost weight. They will also ask about eating habits, how often the baby is producing wet and dirty diapers, and about how the baby is sleeping.

One month visit
This visit will be largely the same as the previous visit, focusing on babys development, and on yours and babys adjustment at home.

Two month visit
Baby will be checked again, and immunizations will usually start at the two month mark. The first dose of the DPT (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis) vaccine is usually administered at this visit. For more information about when immunizations are administered, see the chapter on this subject.

From this point on, you can expect well baby visits every other month, until your baby is a year old. There will routine physical exams, and questions about your babys development. For the first year of life, the baby will receive immunizations at nearly every visit. These visits are not only important opportunities for the doctor to check on your babys progress, but are also opportunities for you to ask questions and gain reassurance about how things are going, so take advantage. For instance, if you are concerned that your child has not reached a development milestone, these visits are a good time to discuss this with your doctor. Your doctor will also be looking for these development milestones, and will alert you if there is an issue. Its helpful to write your questions down as you think of them, so you dont forget.

In addition, be sure to discuss your doctors preferences on calling when your child is sick. For example, is there a 24 hour on-call nursing service for questions? Or, is the on call only for emergencies. Your relationship with your pediatrician is critical to maintaining your childs health and your peace of mind. Dont hesitate to ask questions, and call on your doctor as often as needed to ensure your comfort.

How To Choose Gifts?

March 22nd, 2011

If you need to watch your money, go for small, simple gifts, but always do quality! Showing class is always superior to tackiness and they will feel more special and associate you with quality. A cheaply made or cheesy gift is not likely to be favorably remembered by adults, but will soon become their clutter. Better to give one or two special flowers.than a whole bouquet of common supermarket flowers. Inexpensive, tasteful, quality gifts might include: homemade preserves, four or more quality cloth napkins, a bottle of wine, a well made scented candle, a living plant, gourmet rice, a local item from a recent trip such as a wheel of cheese or a bar of handmade soap, or a small box or bar of gourmet chocolate.

Protect Your Eye Before It Is Too Late!

March 21st, 2011

Do you know that the computer is only one cause of discomfort for contact lens wearers? Have you ever found your eyes are often dry and irritated when wearing them? All these happen because of bad habits in caring for your lenses normally developed in a group of new contact lens users.

Properly caring for your lens and following the guidelines for your type is important in protecting your vision and ensuring your contacts are comfortable to wear. See if you’ve been making these following mistakes that could be ruining your contacts and possibly harming your eyes.

The first mistake is that Cleaning Your Lenses With Water. Your eyes are very sensitive and can easily become infected when you do not clean your lenses properly. The lens develops a build up of deposits that can irritate the eye. Lens cleaning solutions will break down the deposits and disinfect the lens.

Moreover, water and homemade saline solutions are not clean enough for cleaning contact lens because they can contain micro-organisms, chlorine and other minerals that can damage the lens and harm your eyes.

Unless you are wearing disposable lenses you must clean your contacts after every wear. Use an appropriate lens case for storage and clean the case and allow to air dry between uses.

Secondly, some users wear contact lens longer than the recommended amount of time, stated on the box. Some contacts are meant to be thrown out after one day of wear. Others can be worn for a week or a month without removing them in between. Most require removal and cleaning every day. It is important to know the schedule your contacts are intended for to prevent problems with your eyes.

Lastly, the hygiene of your eyes is very important. You have to make sure that anything like hands that will contact to your eyes is clean.

When you remove or insert your contacts be sure to handle them with clean, dry hands. It is better to avoid washing your hands with soaps containing perfumes or oils and don’t allow sunscreen, hand cream or nail polish remover to come in contact with them.

You can use eye drops or natural tear to remoisten your contacts when they are dry and irritated while wearing them rather than trying to take them out. In fact, if your eyes do feel dry and the contact is sticking try to remoisten your contacts before attempting to remove them.

If you wear makeup you should insert the contacts before applying cosmetics and remove them before washing cosmetics off. Powders and sprays can irritate contact lens wearers so be careful when applying powdery shadows or hair spray when wearing contact lens. If irritation occurs DO NOT rub your eyes; remove lenses first and clean them in the cleaning solution before wearing again.

Your eyes are precious – take care to protect it from harm. If you do think you’ve injured or infected your eye do not wear your contacts until you have been seen by an eye care specialist.

What Really Creates Health And Wellbeing?

March 20th, 2011

Most of us know that eating well and exercising is important for good health. Yet often we hear about people 100 years old and older that are still vital and have not eaten perfectly or exercised much. What is the secret of their good health?

Research indicates that a major factor in good health more important than genes, food, or exercise is how we handle stress.

Our bodies are equipped with a fight or flight mechanism that enables us to mobilize our strength when necessary. This mechanism allows us to fight or flee from real and present danger. However, this mechanism is also activated when we BELIEVE there is danger, even when no actual survival danger exists.

For example, it is appropriate for the fight or flight mechanism to activate if you are being physically attacked. When the stress response is activated, blood is taken from our brain and organs and put into our arms and legs to enable us to fight or flee. Our immune system shuts down to give us more energy to physically protect ourselves and ensure our survival in the moment. Once the danger is over and we have discharged the stress through fighting or running, our bodies go back to normal and blood again flows to our brain and organs.

However, what if your thoughts are creating the stress? What if you are imagining being attacked, or being rejected, or losing money, or losing your job, or losing a loved one? In this case, there is no actual real and present danger occurring in the moment. Yet the body does not know the difference between something that is really happening and something that you are thinking about. The body goes into the stress response the moment you think scary thoughts. But instead of being able to fight or flee, you are stuck with the anxiety caused by your thoughts. The blood is in your arms and legs with no way to be released. You cant think very well due to as lack of blood in your brain, your organs are being robbed of necessary nutrients, and your immune system is not functioning properly. Strenuous exercise may release the stress response, but if you keep thinking the scary thoughts, it will just come right back.

Perhaps the most important thing you can do for your health and wellbeing is to become conscious of your thoughts that create stress and become adept at changing your thoughts. People who have learned how to let challenging things roll off their back generally have good health. People who allow the challenges of life to constantly stress them out often have health problems, even when they eat well and get exercise.

Our minds have been programmed from infancy with many untrue thoughts many false beliefs. It is when we think these untrue thoughts that we cause ourselves anxiety and our bodies go into the stress response. However, we all have a Wise Self that knows truth from lies. When we move out of our minds and into our knowing, we will stop thinking the thoughts that cause anxiety and instead operate from the truth of our knowing.

Thoughts that are untrue cause anxiety. The truth brings peace. If you have a thought that you cannot survive being rejected or being alone, you will feel anxious. However, while this might have been true as a child, it is not true as an adult. Your anxious feeling is letting you know that your thought is untrue. If you then think from your Wise Self rather than from your programmed mind: I can handle rejection. Ive been rejected many times and I have not died. Ive been alone many times and I have not died, your body will release the anxiety and you will feel peaceful. Your peaceful feeling is telling you that you are now thinking the truth.

The very best thing you can do for your health and wellbeing is to become aware of the thoughts from your programmed mind that create anxiety, and practice thinking the truth from your Wise Self that creates inner peace.

The Joe Loss Orchestra 75 And Still In The Mood The Legend Lives On!

March 20th, 2011

In 1930 a talented musician aged 21 decided to form a dance band, and hey presto, the countrys, if not the worlds, longest serving entertainment unit was born and has been doing jus that non-stop ever since! The Joe Loss Orchestra now directed by Todd Miller is still appearing countrywide to this day.

I say entertaining because Joe always said, although we are in the music business we are also entertainers. When Joe became ill in 1990 he asked Todd to take over the Orchestra and not one booking was cancelled. Todd himself joined the Orchestra in 1972 and is now regarded by many as one of the best front men in the business.

It was in 1969 that Joe decided, for financial reasons, that he would reduce the personnel to ten musicians and three vocalists. He felt that when the moment was right he would re-assemble the big band. Indeed to this day there are many musicians playing in present day big bands who appear in the Joe Loss Big Band whenever the band is booked.

On the subject of big bands and their leaders there is an amusing story relating to Joe and Billy Cotton. It appears that one morning just after the end of the war, Joe arrived home after a gig just before breakfast. Having had a quick cup of tea and still in pyjamas and dressing gown, who should be knocking at the front door other than Billy Cotton with a brand new motor car. He insisted on taking Joe for a spin and although the weather conditions were pretty grim, bitterly cold and with thick snow off they went into the surrounding countryside. Unfortunately, before too long the car ran out of petrol (it still being rationed that time didnt help) and Billy left Joe in the car whilst he set off in the quest for a garage. There sat Joe as cold as ice and with teeth chattering when along came the local bobby. Pushing his bicycle, he enquired as to why Joe was sitting in the car in freezing weather wearing his pyjamas and dressing gown. Joe informed the police constable that he was Joe Loss and that Billy Cotton had gone off to try and get some petrol. By the look in his eye the constable was finding it hard to believe such a story, until Billy re-appeared with a can of petrol and convinced the sceptic that the story was indeed true! The constable cycled away with a smile on his face with two prized autographs in his notebook!

But I digress. It was with an eight-piece band, playing in the style of Oscar Rabins Romany Band at the Astoria Ballroom, that Joe took the first steps to becoming well-known. His growing popularity brought him a job at the Kit Kat Club where he made many of the BBC outside broadcasts. During his time there he raised the personnel to 11 plus a young lady vocalist a croonette as they were known. She made her first broadcast singing Red Sails In The Sunset the top hit of the day in 1935. She was only 18 and in years to come became the Forces Favourite none other than Vera Lynn.

After a long residency in London Joe began to tour the music halls, as did many bands of the day. During the war he took the band to entertain the troops around the UK and eventually to France and Holland. In 1946 Joe began a regular residency in the Isle of Man from May until the end of September, which lasted until 1959. With the coming together of the ITV companies Joe and the orchestra became the house band for ABC and opened up all of the television regions throughout the UK during the period from 1956 to 1960. They were to be seen regularly on television often up to four times a week. This was followed by a long residency at the Hammersmith Palais until August 1969 broken only by an 18-week season at the Empire Leicester Square and 12months at the Lyceum in 1967. They then moved on to the Empire until November 1970 at which point Joe decided to retire. He told Sam Watmough, the current manager of the band, who joined in 1956 that during the meeting he was to inform the band of his decision.

Joe opened his speech saying Gentlemen, we shall be leaving the Empire and Mecca in 6 weeks time on November 30th. This brought Stan Pickstock, lead trumpet, to his feet, Stan had been with the band since 1961, who said, bloody great, now we can get back on the road, at which point the band applauded.

Joe however was taken aback and said, I didnt think you would want to go on the road again, but if you do thats fine. So the Joe Loss Orchestra was back on the road once again and had remained so ever since.

When Joe first became too ill to travel To0dd fronted the Orchestra until Joe eventually retired on January 31st 1990, two weeks before his 81st birthday. Joe passed away on 8th June, many thought that the Orchestra would not carry on without him, how wrong they were! They remain one of the most popular and busiest bands in the country. To quote Sam Watmough, who had been Joes manager for 30 years, I knew what Joe wanted and we are still proud to be known as Todd Miller and the Joe Loss Orchestra. As Todd himself says, We must be doing something right!

Learn How Internet Firewalls Work To Keep Your PC Safe

March 19th, 2011

Not many of us intentionally leave our cars unlocked or the front of our homes open to strangers. But we often leave our computers wide open to anyone and everyone that may want to snoop.

To get and keep our computers safe from hackers,or anyone wanting to have a look in our computers,we need the aid and assistance of something commonly called Firewalls.

A Firewall can be hardware or software that acts as a gatekeeper to your computer. It does this by monitoring all internet traffic coming in and going out of our computers.

They not only allow the passage of this traffic but inspects all, making sure it is safe and do not contain viruses, any spyware,or other malicious software.

Firewalls control internet traffic in two methods: Packet filtering and stateful inspection. A Packet is a chunk of data and it contains the address of the computer it comes from and a destination address.

Ok,so you’re wondering what on earth is an IP Address.Well, it is an idenifier for your computer device. The format of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers separated by periods. If the Firewall recognizes the Packet and its IP Address,or its Internet Protocol Address,it allows the Packet to pass. The Stateful Inspection method look at the some data in the Packet and compares key chunks of data to a large area that contains known, trusted information.

to see if it is safe or if your computer is expecting the data.It aloso allow safe passage of data if all seems well. The Stateful Inspection method is preferred since it checks the data that have passed through your computer before.

ALL ABOUT HARDWARE FIREWALLS
Hardware Firewalls are devices that are designed to run software Firewalls. So why are there hardware firewalls, you ask.One big advantage of having a Hardware Firewall is that the computer don’t have to do any work. The hardware running the software does all work, thereby leaving the CPU in the computer free to get on with other tasks. The CPU, or Central Processing Unit should be free as much as possible to keep the computer running at peak performance.

ALL ABOUT SOFTWARE FIREWALLS

WHAT FIREWALL PROTECT YOU FROM
There are many creative ways that people use to access or abuse your computer when its not protected. Smeone is able to connect to your computer and control it in some form. This can range from being able to view or access your files to actually running programs on your computer. Some of the software Firewalls protect your computer from are the following.

Email Bombs.
Someone sends you the same e-mail hundreds or thousands of times until your e-mail system cannot accept any more messages. If you spend time on the internet often you will most likely experience this.

Viruses.
This is no doubt the most well known threat.A Virus is a small file which reproduces itself on other computers.Viruses may be harmless to wiping your hard drive clean. Firewalls may not protect you from all viruses. It would be worth your while to invest in good anti virus software as added protection.Once you invest in a Firewall, study its owner’s manual to set it up. Once the Firewall has been installed and setup complete, take a minute to be sure its working.Test the Firewall by going online and visiting a security site.Go to www.grc.com and give their free Shields Up security test a try. If the Firewall pass, you will have the comfort of knowing your PC will have that added protection from someone stealing your credit card information or any valuable information. If you have not invested in a Firewall, won’t wait to give one a try. Your critical files and programs will be much safer and you will have the knowledge of being able to install Firewalls on the PC of your friends, enemies, and everyone else in between.

Medieval Tapestries Add A Sense Of History To Home Decor

March 18th, 2011

Tapestries of early times were often patterned on current events or heroes of the day. Wall tapestries with knights and castles often adorned the very castles they displayed. Tapestries were important in castles to reduce the draft and cold in the large stone buildings. They were hung on the inside of exterior walls in the rooms where people congregated. Tapestries with knights and castles were often created to preserve the history of the occupants of the castle and the weavings often remained in the castle for many centuries and generations. With each new generation adding their piece of work to the visual history on the walls.

What are the Pros and Cons of an Electric Wheel Chair?

March 17th, 2011

Trying to decide whether or not you should get an electric wheel chair as opposed to a manual wheel chair? Before I list the pros and cons on electric wheel chairs, here are a few things you should know about electric wheel chairs.

Ideally you want to get an electric wheel chair from a company that is a licensed supplier that offers good service. This is important in case your wheel chair breaks down. You can choose between a rear wheel drive, mid wheel drive and a front wheel drive wheel chair. If you want speed, get the rear wheel drive. If you want good turning ability, then get the mid wheel drive or front wheel drive. Just be sure to take each version for a test drive.

Here are the pros of owning an electric wheel chair:

The Pros:

1.Perfect for people with limited or no body mobility including those who rely on a wheel chair as their primary method of getting around.
2.Increases the quality of ones life.
3.Great for speed in getting to where you need to go as opposed to self-propelling yourself.
4.Excellent choice if you do not have one someone to push you increases your self-reliance.
5.Nowadays, motors on electric chairs are very quiet.
6.You can get around without requiring a helper to push you.

The Cons:

1.Electric wheel chairs can be expensive as prices range from $1,000 to $3,000. Some electric wheel chairs even cost $10,000!
2.May require service repairs.
3.May not need it if youre going to be in a wheel chair for a short period of time.
4.Can be hard to transport them in vehicles.

Ultimately, when choosing between an electric wheel chair or a manual wheel chair (click here for manual wheel chair pros and cons) you will have to determine what you can afford, the primary uses of the wheel chair, how long you will be in it and your physical condition.
