The Da Vinci Code; This Year’s Biblical Box-Office Bonanza

August 31st, 2011

The Da Vinci Code is now off and running as this years megabuck Biblical controversy. Question is, why do we seem to be afflicted with such a nearly annual entity?

Slight thought reveals the obvious. Given the big numbers that a major studio has to turn to make a return on a movie, its hardly a wonder that they keep turning to what they, in their needy bottom lines, consider the biggest subjects available.

Apparently, The Bible is pretty much at the top of their list.

Here they can find one topic after another that, treated cannily enough, is guaranteed to outrage the sensibilities of millions of comparatively sincere and innocent people and, as a result, garner enough free publicity to ensure that the usually mundane redo of Biblical history will become a must-see movie for millions around the world.

Proof positive, last year we had the sincere savant of the box office, Mel Gibson, release his Passion of Christ on an expectedly ruffled world, and this year weve got resourceful action-adventure scribbler Ron Brown unloading the Hollywood version of his Da Vinci Mother Lode.

No doubt in coming years one of the less-scrupulous perpetrators of popular outrage will write a book and/or make a movie about such admittedly touchy stories as the Virgin Mary and what exactly the Angel Gabriel was doing there the night he told her she was going to conceive.

While this proclivity to Biblical blockbusters is inevitably tough on believers, its also hardly a source of placid delight to those who look on the entire explosive subject as evidence of almost inconceivable gullibility, even high up the ladder of either advocacy.

Which, unfortunately, confirms just how wide an audience Hollywood can expect to attend such ventures toward assured filmic bullion.

How To Choose Gifts?

August 31st, 2011

If you need to watch your money, go for small, simple gifts, but always do quality! Showing class is always superior to tackiness and they will feel more special and associate you with quality. A cheaply made or cheesy gift is not likely to be favorably remembered by adults, but will soon become their clutter. Better to give one or two special flowers than a whole bouquet of common supermarket flowers. Inexpensive, tasteful, quality gifts might include: homemade preserves, four or more quality cloth napkins, a bottle of wine, a well made scented candle, a living plant, gourmet rice, a local item from a recent trip such as a wheel of cheese or a bar of handmade soap, or a small box or bar of gourmet chocolate.

IN SUCCESS LANGUAGE, FAILURE MEANS YOU ARE ALMOST THERE!

August 31st, 2011

IN SUCCESS LANGUAGE, FAILURE MEANS YOU ARE ALMOST THERE!

I have to admit the title of my section this week is OUTSTANDING! We all know as we are progressing towards our personal goals, dreams and aspirations that we will fail repeatedly, and then all of a sudden we achieve our ultimate outcome and attain our WHY in LIFE! As I state on my story page (http://www.johndilemme.com/jd_story.htm), “Each failure is a stepping stone to Success, which in turn will become a very long and lovely stone walkway into the castle of your DREAMS!” You must truly internalize the need to fail in life.

Most people fail more between the ages of 16-25 and then they dont fail ever again in life, which means they never SUCCEED! You see, at the age 25 the majority of people lose their steam and decide to live a life instead of designing a lifestyle for themselves and their families. I am very proud to say that I have failed numerous times in my life. Just ask my parents, they will tell you …”but John you went to college just get a JOB!” As entrepreneurs, we all know that we never have jobs because whatever we do has our life-print on it, which represents our potential. The following is a list of people that we all know who failed before they succeeded. I cannot emphasize enough that you need to continue to try over and over until you succeed and realize that, as I’ve said before, “Each failure is a stepping stone to Success, which in turn will become a very long and lovely stone walkway into the castle of your DREAMS!”

FAILURESBUT NOT QUITE
–After Fred Astaire’s first screen test, a 1933 memo from the MGM testing director said, “Can’t act. Slightly bald. Can dance a little.” Astaire kept that memo over the fireplace in his Beverly Hills home.

–A relatively unsuccessful marketer of restaurant equipment, he didn’t sell his first hamburger until age 52. At a time when many people prepare for retirement, Ray Kroc built McDonald’s from a handful of hamburger stands into the world’s largest food chain.

–When his older brother was killed during WWII, he first withdrew into a shell. Then he began to listen to the radio to ease his pain. Soon he was dreaming about hosting his own radio show. That led Dick Clark to start American Bandstand.

–Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper for lacking ideas. He also went bankrupt several times before he built Disneyland.

The question that I have for you now is, “Do you realize how you must be proud of your failures because they really are successes?” Many of my workshop attendees have heard me say “…experience is what you receive when you do not achieve what you desire.” I suggest to print this out and put it on your desk where you can read this article every day and remind yourself about Fred Astaire, Ray Kroc, Dick Clark, and Walt Disney and say to yourself, “What is MY story going to be?” You need to fail in order to ultimately succeed in LIFE! After all, “IN SUCCESS LANGUAGE, FAILURE MEANS YOU ARE “ALMOST THERE!”

Different Types of Rewards Credit Cards

August 31st, 2011

In todays world of the often and ever-buying consumer, it has become de rigueur for credit card companies, airlines, gasoline/oil companies and a host of other businesses eager to garner a share of the wildly spending and charging publics money, to offer some kind of bonus or reward for using them and their services. Who can blame them? In a time when spending has become a national pastime, there are deals to be made and companies offering some pretty good benefits for signing up with them.

What Are Steroids/Anabolic Steroids?

August 31st, 2011

Steroids are the synthetic hormone drugs similar to the male sex hormone testosterone, which is primarily produced in the testes of males and the ovaries of females. It is also secreted in small amounts by the adrenal glands, and is also found in numerous animals. On average, an adult human male body produces about eight to ten times more testosterone than an adult female body. Testosterone plays very important role in health and growth in both males and females. It is responsible for libido, energy, immune function, and protection against osteoporosis.

Alternatives To Filing Bankruptcy?

August 31st, 2011

There is just no easy way to get out of debt, you have to face up to the consequences. A bankruptcy is not always the answer, as the effects are long lasting. There are four ways to handle debts that are out of control, listed in best to worst in regards to the effect it will have on your credit:

If your credit isn’t in terrible shape, can you reduce your other expenses, even if it means making hard choices or just change your lifestyle to fit your income? Some ways to do this:

Alternatives:

Selling the second car
Pulling equity out of your home
Applying for a non secured signature loan
Obtaining a loan from a relative
Selling your home and paying off your debts with the proceeds and then renting
Cashing out your 401K/retirement benefits
Selling family heirlooms, jewelry, etc

Filing Bankruptcy – Final Solution
If your credit is already gone or one of the above isn’t an option, go through Consumer Credit Counseling Services. Check your yellow pages for the local number. In this way you’re paying off your debts as if you were in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, but you don’t file a bankruptcy.

If CCCS won’t take you, you may want to consider bankruptcy. Filing a Chapter 13 takes longer, but your credit is in a little better standing than if you file a Chapter 7. In Chapter 13 you are given up to 5 years to pay off your debts. The disadvantage is that you’re in bankruptcy for up to 5 years plus your credit report shows your bankruptcy for 7 more years after you have finished paying off your debts.

If you are so far in debt that you can never repay it, then the best solution may be a Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Chapter 7 is the least desirable credit wise, but you are typically out of bankruptcy in 6 months and you don’t have to repay any debt.

Disadvantages of Filing Bankruptcy
The disadvantage is that this shows on your credit report for 10 years from the date of filing your bankruptcy, and creditors are starting to tighten their credit requirements, and you may have a tough time getting future financing. Depending upon how complicated your financial situation is, you may want to consult a lawyer before proceeding.

There is no magic solution. Don’t believe anyone who tells you otherwise.

Three Signs Of A Franchise Winner

August 31st, 2011

There are over 2,500 different franchises for sale right now. Trying to choose the right one might seem like an impossible task. One that is even more intimidating considering the large financial investment at stake. If you are a first time franchise purchaser, where should you begin? The answer is not easy; every franchise is unique and there are hundreds of characteristics to review. That said, certain characteristics keep popping up when we examine the best franchises.

Here are SmarterFranchises signs of a great franchise concept.

1. Multi-unit Ownership
The proof is in the pudding. The best indication that a franchisee is happy with his business is if he spends more money to purchase another unit or an additional territory. The logic is the same as why Honda has such a strong reputation in the car market. If your uncle Jeff has bought three Accords in a row, Honda must be doing something right.

For the most part, multi-unit owners start with one store which becomes so successful that the want a second and so on. In order to finance a second store, a lender will examine the first stores cash flow. If a franchise wasnt financially viable, it would be nearly impossible to open additional units.

Multi-unit ownership is also an indication of operational efficiency in a concept. With some franchises, there is so much work that is impossible for the franchise owner to focus on anything but day to day operations. The book, The E Myth talks extensively about this trap of getting stuck working in your business vs. working on your business. Even if you never plan to open multiple units, this is an important characteristic, because more likely than not, you would eventually like to retire or at least take a vacation one day.

Be wary of franchise owners who explain low multi-unit ownership by suggesting franchisees make enough money with just one unit. If there is one thing history has shown, people rarely decide they have enough money.

2. Proven Franchisor Track Record
There are three items two think about when examining the franchisors track record. The first is an understanding of how much risk there is that the franchisor might go out of business. Unfortunately, many of the 2,500 franchise concepts available just wont make it as sustainable businesses. If you purchase one of these concepts, you may lose much of your investment.

Second, the franchisors track record should give you an indication about the quality of the concept. Did the franchisor own several successful stores for many years before deciding to franchise his concept or did he just decide one day that there was good money in franchising so he better come up with a concept.

Third, franchisors with longer track records have more established training and support programs. While you might save a few thousand dollars buy getting into a franchise early, chances are you wont get much for your investment. New franchisees havent had the time to put together development support or training programs or marketing campaigns. Also, if you are one of the first buyers, you are the guinea pig which often means more risk. Maybe a new food concept works great in a mall food court or maybe it doesnt? Wouldnt be nice if you werent the one who had to run the experiment?

3. Strong, independent franchisee association
Unfortunately, the unspoken reality is that the franchisors and franchisees interests arent always aligned. Eventually, there will be disagreements over finances, marketing programs or development issues. Knowing that issues are sure to arise, it is helpful to know that you will have an organized group of franchisees who can relate to your situation. Independent associations have many benefits. In addition to creating leverage for the purpose of negotiating with the franchisor, an association also can improve communication among franchisees. Independent associations also allow members to pool resources to hire competent professionals such as lawyers or financial advisors or marketing consultants. Finally, like with any organization, a collective, institutional memory is created. The AFA has an excellent article on associations here.

It is also a negative sign if the franchisor goes out of its way to discourage an association. It usually means that the franchisor does not have the franchisees best interests in mind and is afraid of having to deal fairly with franchisees.

In addition to independent associations, franchisees may also develop a coop to purchase goods at a discount or control a portion of the systems advertising budget or develop a lobby group for a specific issue. All of these our good signs.

External Hard Disk Drive: The Best Backup Medium

August 31st, 2011

Want to backup quickly and easily? Backup to external hard disk drives.

Backup to external hard disk drives easily, securely and efficiently.

As a hard disk is the fastest and largest backup medium you can get, you may want to backup all your important files to an external hard drive. You can backup literally everything: your Outlook and Outlook Express files, your bookmarks, your favourite save games, and of course, your important work documents, photos, images and maybe even videos.

As an external HDD is detatched from your system and, combined with a strong encryption algorithm, like blowfish or 3DES, you can get maximum security. Just make sure you actually remember the encryption password. You can also store your external hard disk offsite (at a friend’s house, a paid locker or specialized fire-proof storage place) in case your information is very important (well, generally, anyone can do that and it can’t hurt for sure).

As external hard disk drives have the cheapest storage volume (about 200Gb for $150?) and you can reuse them for several years, you may as well get the cheapest backup medium at your disposal. When using a backup schedule, you can simply backup the backup program run when you are absent (or maybe even at night) to backup everything without supervision. If you need two or more backup disks, you may as well get another external HDD.

Also, now there are quite large mobile hard drives, which can admit all the necessary data: work documents, e-mail files, etc. You can also carry your data anywhere you want and feel safe, because some external hard disks are now hard to break by dropping.

So, go with external HDD and backup as fast as you want, as much as you want, secure your important data, get the cheapest backups and even be able to carry your backups anywhere you want.

Virgin Coconut Oil For Relief Of Chronic Fatigue

August 31st, 2011

For centuries, coconut oil has been considered a vital source of food for health and general well-being. In tropical countries where coconut palm trees abound, locals have long been benefitting from this so called Tree of Life. Research shows that virgin coconut oil, like mother’s milk, is rich in lauric acid which is known for its antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiprotozoal properties needed for good health and well-being. Like all things pure and natural, the virgin coconut oil is extracted from fresh coconuts unlike other commercial grade oil which came from dried coconut meat of copra. Virgin coconut oil has an important role in finding cure and remedy for many of the illnesses brought upon by unhealthy lifestyle and the refined diet of modern living.

Benefits of Sleeping on an Adjustable Bed

August 31st, 2011

Sleep is essential for our existence; it is the state of natural rest to re-energize the body. During sleep the body regains much needed strength, and relieves the tiredness brought about by daily activities. A third of a persons life is spent sleeping in bed which is why it is important to have a comfortable bed to rest on. Many people are not aware that they are sleeping in uncomfortable beds. This is evident why some parts of your body ache after a long sleep. You may also feel restless no matter how long you sleep.

How To Prepare For Snowshoeing

August 31st, 2011

Everybody knows that skiing and snowboarding have been the most highlighted sports of the winter, but what about snowshoeing? Have you ever tried it?

If you havent, then it’s about time you hit the mountain trails with some snowshoes on your feet.

Here are a few pointers to make your first snowshoeing trip go as smoothly as possible:

1. Try to get snowshoes that are correspondent for your weight. There is nothing worse than trekking out into the white powder and sinking in it up to your thigh, because you didn’t buy some snowshoes that fit you properly. Shoes can vary from weight ratings of as little as 30 pounds, up to over 300 pounds. Make sure you find the right size and fit for your own liking.

2. Choose snowshoes that are lightweight. This is probably the most important factor to consider while selecting snowshoes. These mean shoes can range from super light, not more than a pound a piece, to weighing several pounds for each shoe. Imagine lugging around a brick on the bottom of your foot for a couple of miles – is this any fun? Always try to choose the lightest snowshoe that seems to size your taste.

3. Make sure theres plenty of water and snack food while you snowshoe. While providing excellent protein and other natural goodness, pine needles won’t taste very good to you or your kids as a snack. A healthy trail mix, some granola bars, and a large bottle of water should be enough for a short trip. Remember to keep yourself hydrated, especially when the conditions are nice and sunny.

4. Although this is a sport your whole family can enjoy, you definitely do not want to be snowshoeing with your child on some difficult hills. So, start off by hiking on some easier trails and work your way up to more advanced trails as your skills and comfort level improve.

5. The most important thing is to wear layers of clothing that you can take off and put back on as you wish. A lightweight, waterproof shell is very important. Do not wear only a heavy, cold weather coat, unless you know or feel it is absolutely freezing. Why? You will sweat buckets and you will begin to experience mild heat exhaustion symptoms quickly.

The power of your body to stay warm must not be underestimated, while you are snowshoeing. While you are exercising in the snow, if it isn’t raining or actually snowing, your body temperature is going to skyrocket.

Your next clothing priority should be waterproof boots. Your feet will get wet with all of the snow bouncing around during snowshoeing. So do wear waterproof boots.

6. Finally, rest if you need to. Stop as often as necessary and give your body the time to regenerate. Don’t go so far that you can’t turn around and make it back to where you left from. Always be aware of matching your energy and skills to the weather conditions and terrain. Keep yourself and your family safe.

Stay on the right track and enjoy the experience of snowshoeing!

How to Sell Your Art Making The Most Out Of Art Shows

August 30th, 2011

One of the quickest and more effective ways to expose your art or crafts to the public is by opening a booth at an art or craft show. Thousands of people come to these art shows each year with the intention of buying something, and there doesnt appear to be an end in sight.

Before you pack your bags and head out to the next show, you should definitely learn as much as you can about art shows. This type of work requires planning, research and various expenses, and may not be for everyone.

A great starting point is to visit http://www.sunshineartist.com. Sunshine Artist is a great magazine that covers art shows in detail. They provide listings of upcoming art shows and information on how you can participate. They also evaluate art shows and provide reports on sales, attendance, and other important details.

It may be a good idea to head out to your first art show as a visitor before actually setting up shop. Once you arrive, walk around and just observe how everything works. Observe the booths that have the most traffic and see what they are doing right. Introduce yourself to the booth owner and see if they are open to talking about their success with you. As long as they are not in direct competition with you, they should be happy to give you some pointers.

When you sell your work at an art show you are selling directly to the public. You make all of the profit. There is no need to share a huge percentage with an agent or gallery owner.

It is probably best to sell items at various prices to accommodate the different buyers that come to your booth. If you typically sell paintings for thousands of dollars, offer smaller, more affordable prints as well. This way, your art can be available to everyone.

Make sure you can accept credit cards. Many people who visit art shows pay by credit card. If you arent set up to accept credit cards, then you will more than likely lose sales.

Setting up and running a booth at an art show can be challenging. Bring a family member or friend along to help you set up and help customers. Its also nice to have someone to keep you company and provide support and encouragement.

Art and Craft shows are a great way to build a customer mailing list. Set up a little section at your booth inviting customers and browsers to provide you with their name, address, and email address. Next time you attend an art show, you can send out a mailer to your list. You can also let your mailing list know about any new art or crafts you have for sale. It may not be easy to build a mailing list, as people are a bit hesitant when it comes to parting with personal information. To entice people to join, you can offer something for free. You could create small color postcard prints of your work and put them in inexpensive frames and give those away to each subscriber.

Make sure you keep track of your expenses and sales. You want to determine if you actually made a profit, otherwise you may have to make adjustments or possibly not attend the same art show again.

Dont get discouraged if you dont make a huge profit your first time out. Like I said in the beginning, art shows may not be for every artist. Many artists sell at art shows exclusively, while others only use art shows once in a while for marketing purposes.

Theres a Book in You!

August 30th, 2011

You know you have the skill, knowledge and ability to write a book. But whats keeping you from writing is the problem of publishing it. You dont have a direct line at the editors of some of the biggest publishing house in the country and you certainly cant afford getting rejected for several times by these publishing houses. If this is your dilemma, then maybe it is time to consider self-publishing.

But what is self-publishing? Self-publishing basically allows the author to be in control of the entire creative and selling process of his book. Self-publishing is one of the fastest growing book publishing method in the publishing industry. If you are a self-published author you pay the full cost of producing your book and are responsible for marketing and distributing it. This means that all subsidiary rights, the copyright, all finished copies and all money received from book sales are solely your.

Printing the book is just a small part of publishing your book. Selling it is the most important factor. There are hundreds of printers out there that are willing to print your book. But you must be careful in selecting the right one or it could cost you thousands of dollars in sales.

Profit may not always be your reason for writing a book. Your book may be designed and created to fill specific needs of a business, organization or your family or it may be designed to explore your own interest. As traditional publishing houses prefer books that will interest the mass market, they will not usually accept a book intended for a small audience. Thus, self-publishing may be right for you.

Some of the reasons that people self-publish their work are because of time, control, profit, legacy and locality grounds. Because a book is a reflection of the author, self-publishing gives you the final word on the direction of your work. All decisions are wholly yours and not entrusted to third parties who have interests different from your own. Additionally, as a self-publisher you own all rights to your book. If you use a traditional publishing company, they will own all rights. Thus, if they lose interest in your book you will not be able to print additional copies unless you purchase your rights back. Whats more, people do not only publish their books to make money. They publish to share what they have learned or leave a legacy.

As a writer you would not want your precious books to end up in some dusty garage. So if you think self-publishing is right for you then its time to start moving and polishing your pages to get them snapped up as soon as possible.

Poppies in Tuscany Definitive Flower Pictures

August 30th, 2011

A splash of scarlet poppies among lush green fields in the foreground, a medieval hill town in Tuscany, the red brick warm and glowing, in the background the photograph travel brochures dream of. People will flock to see fields of poppies. Finding the perfect combination to photograph together in real life, even in Tuscany, isnt always easy. (See my article Poppies in Tuscany the Digital Photography Alternative if youre tempted to try to create the shot digitally).

Everywhere you drive among the Tuscan hills in late May, early June the fields of poppies cut a swathe of picturesque red and strike a chord of nostalgia in those from countries where agriculture is now dominated by herbicides and pesticides. So the poppies are everywhere, medieval towns are scattered liberally over the countryside, but to find the two strategically placed at the right angle to each other, with the right light, to get the ultimate shot, involves a lot of driving down tracks and dirt roads.

Drive south from Siena, towards Montalcino, San Quirico dOrcia and Pienza and you will find endless vistas of rolling hills, cypress trees, small towns on hills with Monte Amiata gently curving on the horizon, here and there splashes of red lure you into finding a strada bianca to get closer could this be your shot?

Maybe we will have to allow for other possibilities in the background: a lone Romanesque church with a couple of sentinel cypress trees is a classic shot; or perhaps a tumble-down farm-house. It is very much a matter of luck and perseverance to find the right components of the shot — the skill lies in choice of lens (telephoto or wide-angle), angle (lying low down amid the flowers or standing up to gain the panoramic view), time of day (morning or evening light).

Look at the shot through wide-angle lens first for greatest depth of field, make sure the background town doesnt dwindle to nothing, fill the foreground with a sea of poppies. The telephoto gives more prominence to the town or church allowing a bright smudge of colour from the poppies in the foreground. Choose early morning or evening light once you have found the right place to take the shot, you will have to calculate which is better and wait it out midday sun will bleach out all colour and atmosphere.

Once the light is right shoot every possible combination of lenses, angles, apertures and framing (vertical and horizontal) that you can think of. By next week the poppies may be over or harvested and next year a different crop may have taken its place. So your shot will be unique, the definitive Poppies in Tuscany photograph of the year.

Walliams Swims Across the English Channel To France

August 30th, 2011

The English Channel has been crossed more than 1100 times until now. About 900 crossings have been made from England to France and around 250 crossings from France to England. Most of the swimmers that completed the crossing are man but women have made it too.

The record of the Channel crossings is held by Alison Streeter, who managed to make 43 successful swims across the channel.

British star David Walliams, well known actor and writer had the initiative of crossing the English Channel for charity. The purpose of this attempt is to raise money for Sport Relief. The comedian is aware of the difficulty of his attempt and that is why he trained himself for almost 12 months with former Olympic pentathlete Greg Whyte.

Walliams is saying that he will “just be in a pair of Speedos and goggles – it’s what the public wants,” but he took his training very seriously. The crossing of the Channel is known as “the Everest of open-water swimming” and only a few of the ones that try it succeed.

But jokes aside, what the 34-year-old comedian is attempting is quite a feat. Few people succeed – just 10% according to some figures – and the swim is known Walliams, who is raising money for Sport Relief, has spent the last 11 months training and Alison Streeter, the record holder for the Channel crossings explains what are the most difficult things is this attempt:
“It’s not about the distance, lots of people can swim the equivalent in a pool,” she says. “It comes down to the cold. Fit swimmers are often all muscle and don’t have much fat on them, this means they get cold quicker and once the cold gets into your muscles it is very hard to continue.”

Considering that Walliams plans to make his attempt some time between 28 June and 15 July which is early in the season, it means that the cold will be an even greater issue.

Other important factors that make the attempt difficult are the tides, the wind and the weather. The tides are hard to predict as they are strong and change direction approximately every six hours and they change in height and flow speed every day.

The local weather conditions can change very quickly and sometimes do not match the forecasts.

A problem not to be ignored is the large number of ships using these waters, as to go from England to France you have to swim across the shipping lanes. There are more than 600 commercial ship movements and almost 100 ferry crossings between Dover and Calais every day. The difficult job of keeping the swimmer out of the path of these vessels, its the job of the accompanying pilot boat.

Ms Streeter says that she has done 43 swims – seven in one year once – and every one of them has been different” but she believes that “David Walliams seems to be preparing in the right way, so he will have a fair chance.”

On 4th July 2006, David Walliams started from a beach near Dover and successfully swam the 21 miles across the English Channel in 10 hours 30 minutes. Before the swim he said he hopes to complete the 21-mile charity swim in less than 16 hours and declared: “I reckon I have a 50/50 chance of getting across. I hope people see it as a symbolic thing.

How To Choose The Snowboard Thats Right For You

August 30th, 2011

Picking out a snowboard.can be difficult because there are so many brands and types to choose from. Three major types of boards are freestyle, alpine, and freeride. When picking out a snowboard, you need to determine what style of riding you are going to be doing, and get a board specific to that type of riding. If you are going to be spending your time in the half-pipe a freestyle board is best for you. Freeride is best if you are going to be making runs down the hill, and alpine will be best if you are up for some high-speed racing.

Another important aspect of picking out a board is making sure that you get boots and bindings that go with the board. Each set up is going to have its own characteristics specific to the type of riding that a person will be doing.

Beginners should start with a freestyle (http://www.mountainsnowboarding.com/freestyle) or freeride board, freestyle bindings and soft boots. This set up is going to give you some forgiveness when learning. Shorter boards are also better for beginners because this allows them to maneuver and steer the board easier. The board should come up between your shoulders and nose. The height of the board isnt the only thing to consider though.

Flex is another aspect to look at. Heavier riders for their height will want to get a board that is a bit stiffer, and lighter riders will want to get a board that offers more flex.

Also, dont forget about the width of the board. If you have smaller feet this wont be as much of an issue for you. However, a person with larger feet needs to make sure their toes (in their boots) dont hang of their board. If they do, your toes can catch in the snow making it more probable for you to fall. If you have bigger feet, you will need to get a wider board.

When starting out, it is a good idea to first rent equipment, because snowboarding is expensive. Buying the equipment before actually deciding if you enjoy snowboarding can be a waste of money. Going to your local store and talking to the sales people to see if they rent can be the best way to test set ups to see which one is the best for you while you are still learning.

Once you have decided that snowboarding is right for you, and are ready to go and buy your own gear, the best time for you to go is going to be at the end of season. The best deals will come out at the end of the season when stores are trying to get rid of their merchandise to have room for the upcoming season of whatever it may be.

The Importance of Paying Attention to Ulcer Symptoms

Stressful lifestyles, poor diets and the abuse of cigarettes, alcohol and caffeine are characteristic to many people these days. All these factors contribute to the development of digestive disorders and an increasing number of people have been diagnosed with different forms of ulcer lately.

Ulcer is an inflammation, sourness or lesion of the gastrointestinal tract and the disorder can either be developed at the lining of the duodenum, stomach or esophagus. Some forms of ulcer (duodenal ulcer) are considered to be of benign nature, while others (stomach ulcer) may even lead to cancer if ignored or mistreated.

Ulcer occurs on the background of deteriorations of the protective mucus barrier that covers the stomach and internal organs. The main cause of the disorder is considered to be bacterial infestation. Ulcer is developed in the presence of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, which cause infections of the gastrointestinal tract. It is very important to intervene quickly in overcoming ulcer, as it may lead to complications like perforate ulcer or bleeding ulcer. In most cases, these severe forms of ulcer need immediate surgical intervention, as they seriously affect the health of patients, sometimes even causing their death.

In the United States alone, millions of people suffer from ulcer and other gastrointestinal disorders at certain stages in their lives. There are thousands of new cases of ulcer every year and many people that are diagnosed with some forms of the disorder need hospitalization. It is vital to spot ulcer symptoms as soon as possible, in order to prevent complications from occurring.

The most common ulcer symptoms are sourness, pain and burns at the abdominal level. Many people tend to disregard these first ulcer symptoms, considering that their internal discomfort may be due to stress and fatigue. Only when they observe that their abdominal discomfort and pain reappears periodically, people realize that something is wrong. When ulcer occurs, affected people experience pain and sourness on the empty stomach, but also between meals and sometimes late at night. Some people may feel no internal distress during daytime, while having problems sleeping at night because of abdominal pain. These pains can be temporarily ameliorated by eating or taking antacids, but this wont stop them from reoccurring.

Other ulcer symptoms include poor appetite, severe indigestion, nausea and vomiting. In the case of more severe forms of the disorder, ulcer symptoms may include the presence of blood in the vomit and feces, dark-colored vomit of thick consistency, black stools, bloating, belching, fatigue, body weakness and dehydration. Constant bleeding may cause anemia and weight loss.

It is vital to spot ulcer symptoms as soon as possible. When you experience abnormalities that indicate the presence of ulcer, you should ask for medical guidance and follow an appropriate treatment for your condition. Prompt intervention when dealing with ulcer can stop complications from occurring, minimizing the threat of the disorder.

Steps to Managing Chronic Pain

August 30th, 2011

Most of us will unfortunately experience some degree of pain in our lives. If I had one wish, it would be that nobody would suffer from the agony of chronic pain. Indeed, many of us will in our lifetime, and still many of us will feel lost and alone in a world that doesnt understand this unexplainable pain.

Although there are many types of chronic pain, it is often true with any kind of chronic pain, that a multidisciplinary approach is necessary. A combination of patient education, medications, rehabilitation, and psychosocial counseling is generally the best approach.

Here are three basic tips for managing chronic pain. Each step is equally important in managing the pain, through every aspect of our lives.

The First process is to respect the pain. Because chronic pain requires many office visits, it is important to find a physician who understands you, your pain, and your condition. Patients often find themselves without adequate care, or having their complaints dismissed by their doctors. The patient and the doctor must be willing to educate themselves as much as possible. Little is known about what causes chronic pain, because it often occurs in the absence of ongoing illness or disease.

The Second stage is to recognize the psychosocial aspects of pain. Chronic pain has the ability to control your life. Every sufferer should be constantly taking steps to prevent this. Studies show that two thirds of patients with chronic pain have coexisting symptoms of depression and anxiety. Many patients get discouraged after countless doctor visits, and a myriad of diagnostic tests, and become a victim of their pain. They fall into what is called the sick role. The sick role can have positive benefits such as extra attention, sick leave, and sympathy from others. The negative effects are usually quite debilitating though, including isolation and feelings of worthlessness.

Fortunately there are some things that you can do to manage chronic pain and avoid the sick role.

Stay Active It is important for everybody to stay active. Physical therapy focusing on reconditioning, stretching, and pain reduction modalities (e.g. ice, heat, ultrasound, etc.) can have a drastic effect on mood and a feeling of accomplishment towards pain management.

Focus on Others Being active in the community, staying in touch with friends and family, and volunteer activities can help to keep your mind turned towards others and off of your pain.

Accept your Pain Dont deny or exaggerate your pain. If you need help, dont feel ashamed to ask for it. If you avoid doing things you can do, make an effort to do those things.

Stay Healthy Getting adequate sleep, eating healthy, and emitting alcohol, tobacco, and drug use from your life can have amazing affects on your pain.

The Final step to treating chronic pain involves different methods of attack. It is important that you know the treatment options available to you. Be clear when speaking to your doctor, and discuss your choices. Let them know if you are willing to try alternative forms of therapy or treatment, such as massage, chiropractic, acupressure, acupuncture, etc. Another important thing you will discuss is your options of medication. There are many medications available such as neuropathic, psychiatric, and pain medications.

It is always important to remember that you are not alone. There is a world full of people suffering from chronic pain, and there other people and doctors that understand what you are going through. It is crucial that you continue to take steps toward a total recovery and in finding long term pain management techniques that work for you.

Tips to Avoid Identity Theft

August 30th, 2011

What is rampant, spreading like wildfire and can kill life as you know it? No, not a deadly virus (but close). Answer: Identity theft. My stepson, Aaron, was a victim of identity theft recently. Someone stole his bank cards, deposited fake checks into his account, then withdrew cash. The deposited fraudulent checks and overdraft charges hurt his credit, and hes slowly recovering and rebuilding his score.

Tips to avoid identity theft:
1.Buy a shredder. Aggressively protect your social security, credit card or bank numbers.
2.Use a lock-in mailbox. This isnt 100% safe, but its much safer than one without a lock.
3. Protect your out-going mail. Get it into the box or the hands of a postal clerk. Heavily trafficked offices often have out-going mail in the entryway. While this may save time, its not safe.
4.Keep receipts and compare to your statements when they come once a month. Banks make mistakes all the time.
5.Keep financial documents under lock and key (at the bank or in a home safe).
6.Dont give out your social security cardever.
7.Know whats in your wallet. Do you know how many credit cards are in your wallet?
8.Dont discuss detailed financial information on a cordless or cell phone. That information can be intercepted.
9.Monitor your credit reports. You can sign up for a monitoring service or do it yourself periodically. Your credit is one of your assets, so protect it.
